Senior Microsoft Hyper-V Migration Engineer / Architect

Travel: Typically 5–7 consecutive days onsite per deployment/migration event

We are seeking an experienced Senior Microsoft Hyper-V Migration Engineer / Architect to support a large-scale, multi-site infrastructure transformation. This role will be responsible for deploying and configuring Microsoft Hyper-V environments and performing production migrations of workloads from VMware ESXi/vSphere to Microsoft Hyper-V.

This is a hands-on engineering position, not a remote advisory role. The ideal candidate is comfortable traveling to customer locations for 5–7 days at a time, independently executing deployment and migration activities, troubleshooting issues in real time, and working directly with customer infrastructure teams.

The program is expected to provide up to two years of ongoing project work.

Key Responsibilities

Deploy, configure, and validate Microsoft Hyper-V environments at customer locations.
Build and configure Hyper-V hosts and clusters using established architecture and deployment standards.
Configure Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) for highly available Hyper-V environments.
Deploy and configure associated Microsoft virtualization and management technologies.
Configure Hyper-V virtual networking, VLANs, NIC teaming/SET, vSwitches, storage connectivity, and cluster networking.
Integrate Hyper-V environments with existing Active Directory, DNS, NTP, monitoring, backup, security, and management platforms.
Configure and validate shared storage, including SAN, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, SMB-based storage, or other enterprise storage platforms as required.
Perform discovery and readiness validation of existing VMware environments prior to migration.
Plan and execute VMware ESXi/vSphere to Hyper-V migrations.
Convert and migrate production virtual machines while minimizing application downtime.
Validate guest operating systems, networking, storage, applications, and services following migration.
Troubleshoot migration, virtualization, Windows Server, storage, networking, and application connectivity issues.
Develop and execute migration runbooks, implementation plans, validation procedures, and rollback procedures.
Perform pre-migration and post-migration testing and documentation.
Work directly with customer infrastructure, network, storage, security, application, and operations teams during migration events.
Provide knowledge transfer to customer operational teams following deployment.
Maintain accurate implementation and as-built documentation for each site.
Participate in after-hours or weekend migration activities when required.

Required Technical Experience

Candidates should have strong hands-on experience with:

Microsoft Hyper-V
Windows Server 2019 / 2022 / 2025
Windows Server Failover Clustering
Hyper-V high availability and cluster design
Hyper-V networking and virtual switches
Microsoft Active Directory and DNS
Enterprise SAN and/or shared storage
VMware ESXi and vSphere
VMware vCenter
VMware-to-Hyper-V workload migration
Virtual machine conversion and migration technologies
Windows and Linux virtual machine migration
Enterprise networking concepts, including VLANs, routing, DNS, MTU, and NIC configuration
Backup/recovery and disaster recovery concepts
PowerShell-based administration and automation
Production change-control and migration procedures

Experience with System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), Windows Admin Center, Azure Arc, Azure Migrate, Veeam, or other enterprise migration/management platforms is highly desirable.

VMware Migration Experience

This role requires more than general Hyper-V administration experience. Candidates should have demonstrated experience migrating production workloads from VMware to Microsoft virtualization platforms.

Ideal candidates will understand:

VMware VM discovery and dependency assessment
VM compatibility analysis
VMware Tools removal/replacement
VMDK-to-VHDX conversion
BIOS versus UEFI considerations
Windows and Linux guest migration
Static IP preservation and network mapping
Application dependency validation
Migration sequencing
Cutover planning
Downtime management
Rollback planning
Post-migration performance and application validation

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of enterprise virtualization/infrastructure experience.
3+ years of significant hands-on Hyper-V experience.
Demonstrated experience performing VMware-to-Hyper-V migrations in production environments.
Experience supporting large enterprise or multi-datacenter environments.
Experience executing repeatable infrastructure deployments across multiple sites.
Strong PowerShell skills.
Experience with enterprise storage and networking platforms.
Microsoft certifications related to Windows Server, Azure, or hybrid infrastructure are a plus.
VMware certifications are beneficial given the source environment.
Experience working in regulated, healthcare, financial, utility, government, or other highly controlled enterprise environments is beneficial.

Travel Requirements

This position requires significant U.S. travel.

Engineers should expect to:

Travel to customer locations for approximately 5–7 consecutive days at a time.
Perform onsite infrastructure deployment, migration, troubleshooting, and validation.
Travel repeatedly throughout the engagement as additional locations are deployed.
Support evening, overnight, or weekend migration windows when necessary.
Work remotely between onsite deployment events as project requirements dictate.

Travel expenses will be handled in accordance with the project’s travel and expense policy.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is hands-on, technically strong, and comfortable owning a migration event onsite. This person should be capable of arriving at a customer location, validating the environment, deploying or finalizing the Hyper-V infrastructure, executing the migration runbook, troubleshooting unexpected issues, and leaving the customer with a stable and fully validated environment.

The successful candidate should be equally comfortable working with Microsoft and VMware technologies and should understand that successful migrations require knowledge beyond the hypervisor—including networking, storage, Active Directory, operating systems, backup, security, and application dependencies.

Engagement Opportunity

This is not a short-term single migration. The program is expected to involve multiple deployment and migration events across customer locations with potential work extending for up to two years.
